My dear Bletchley Park

I went to one of my favourite places to play with my new Nikon D3100, Bletchley Park – home of the code breakers. Well, cypher breakers technically. I’ve been a tour guide at BP since April last year so I’m lucky enough to have free rein of this fascinating and beautiful place. BP has secured £4.6m of lottery funding and is embarking on a huge refurbishment and building project to rescue its wartime buildings, particularly the poor huts, and expand the museum. Here are some pics of it in its current state.

Hut 3 – army and airforce Enigma translation and analysis. This hut was not in charge of deciphering any messages, its job was to work through the Enigma messages broken into by its sister hut, Hut 6. The huts always worked in pairs so in the same way, Hut 8 broke into naval Enigma while Hut 4 translated and processed those messages. Today Hut 3 is covered in asbestos and it’s not safe to go inside.

Poor Hut 6 – army and airforce Enigma deciphering. This is where these cyphers were actually broken before the messages were sent next door for the next stage. It’s in a particularly sorry state because many years ago some bright spark treated the woodwork with something which actually repels paint.
Hut 6
Hut 11, AKA the Bombe Room, AKA, the Hell Hole – at all times a very dark and hot place to work. Today, freezing almost all year round.
Hut 11
Hut 11 interior – the Bombe machine is just a prop from the film Enigma, which was donated to BP after filming (although the film was not made at BP), and is split in two just to show the front and back. But there is a working Bombe in B Block. The Bombes were designed by Alan Turing to work out the wheel settings for Enigma, enabling BP to type the enciphered messages back into a machine that could behave like an Enigma and discover the original German plain text. At the end of the war the Wrens who had the misfortune to work in this very uncomfortable place were told to smash up the machinery for security reasons.

Weekend cocktail

IMG00375-20121112-1512

A Murmurer Cocktail this Friday –

1/4 gill of Gin

1/4 gill of Sherry

1/2 teaspoonful of Angostura Bitters

1/4 teaspoonful of Lime Juice

1 dash of Lemon Peel Juice

1/2 tumblerful of broken Ice

Half fill the tumbler with broken ice and add the Angosutra Bitters. Then add the Gin, the Sherry and the Lime Juice. Stir well and pass through a strainer into a cocktail glass. Serve with a dash of lemon peel juice on top. This is a very pleasant cocktail of medium strength, apparently.

Weekend cocktail

sjff_01_img0180

I just found out today that sadly, my good friend Katie’s house burnt down. The roof has been destroyed as has almost everything in the house. The insurance is all sorted and luckily Katie lives in a self-contained flat in the extension so most of her stuff is fine. Unfortunately her sister’s room is completely ruined. If I had some champagne right now I’d make them each one of these to try and cheer them up.

Champagne Cocktail –

3 or 4 dashes of Angostura Bitters

3/4 gill of Champagne

1 slice of Lemon

The juice of 1/4 Lemon

1 small lump of Sugar

1 small piece of Ice

Soak the lump of sugar in the Angostura Bitters. Squeeze the juice of 1/4 lemon into a wine glass and add the saturated sugar. Then add the piece of ice and full up with the Champagne. Serve with a slice of lemon. This is an admirable pick-me-up, my little book says. I’m sure Katie could do with one!

Birthday tea

While I was sadly trapped in my office working for most of my birthday yesterday, my lovely mum was making pink buttercream cupcakes and little sandwiches for an afternoon tea. Yay! It was the first time I had properly used the lovely teacups from Joy that my work friends had given me for a leaving present in the spring.

Christmas is coming to Ollie Vee’s!

I popped in to see my good friend Billie at her vintage shop, Ollie Vee’s, yesterday afternoon. This Leighton Buzzard vintage haven is one of my favourite places. I’ve been one of the biggest customers since shortly after it opened about four years ago and used to regularly get first dibs on stock that hadn’t made it to the shop floor yet. I even used to relax myself after a stressful week doing my real job in London by tidying rails, steaming clothes and doing the till. This is where ‘Jenny Vintage’ came from. Everyone in our odd little community has a shop name – Billie, Jonny Valentine, Ruby Retro (my friend Robbi)… I think Helen’s just Helen. I might start calling her Hot Lips.

Now that I’ve moved away from Leighton Buzzard I don’t make it down to the shop so often so I was really excited when I walked in yesterday and found Christmas was well on its way –

Of course I bought one of the bunny night lights –
